Shopify customer segments & creating loyal customer segment

Shopify
Segments

What is Shopify customer segments?

It is a way of grouping customers. We are defining rules in the Shopify system so users can be assigned to the correct “segments” accordingly. One user can be in multiple segments as well. There are many use cases where this is useful. Marketing and defining discounts are one of them.

Recently, Shopify brought segmentation into Shopify Flow as well to apply actions on specific user segments. In this blog post though, we will go through how to create segments and next steps.

How to create segments?

Navigate to the Shopify admin dashboard and click “Segments” under “Customers”. You can see a couple of example segments there to explore. Don’t worry if you don’t see any. We will create one by clicking the
Create segment
button on the top right corner.

Here we will define the rules of this segments. This will tell Shopify when the rule is met customer should be in this segment. For this example, we will create a segment where customers purchased at least 1 product. To do that, we will leverage number_of_orders variable. So, our rule is number_of_orders > 0. Hit
Apply
and see that segment is created.

That is it! Now, whenever a new customer purchases something, they will be in this newly created segment.

We can also use “OR”, “AND” logical operators. These are helpful to combine filters together. For “OR”, at least one rule needs to met. For “AND”, all the rules need to met. That is the only difference between these 2. To see all filter option, click the filter icon on top right corner of the rule editor.
